Fun activism

We do a lot of canned food drives, clothing and toy donations and even fundraisers for different charities within our community, but it can be very difficult to find an activist project for young children that is actually fun and engaging. Right now we are selling our Girl Scouts cookies and as much as Wood Sprite wants to hit her goal, she sure does not enjoy selling at the moment (I think she would if she got more yeses!).

When you can find something that they can do for fun as well as service, that’s when you know that you’ve touched an interest—when you can make it into something meaningful. Here are a few ideas for doing that.

Donate your child’s drawings. If you have an artist or a child who simply enjoys creating art around his or her interests, see which ones he or she is willing to part with and give them to a nursing center, hospital or assisted living facility to help cheer people up.

Make seedbombs. This form of activism is a way to spread the joy of flowers and nature while still having a good time. Don’t know how to make a seed bomb? Crafting a Green World has a tutorial for you to follow.

Engage your child in teaching and mentoring other children. We have a group of 9th grade girls mentoring our daughters in Scouts right now and they all seem to love it! See if your child will help show another person how to read, how to play Minecraft, whatever your child is interested in.
