Fingerprint art!

11/19/13

This Thursday, I’ll be leading a fingerprint art class for one of our co-ops and I am so excited. For starters, it’s a class that’s just fun and I won’t be prepping any snacks or drinks, which is a relief. I like to provide them, but I always worry about allergies. Even when you ask parents about them, some forget, and then the day of class you’re scrambling to find something that’s gluten-free so the whole group can have a snack!

Anyway, fingerprint (or thumbprint) art is simply using your fingerprints to create fun works of art. You dip your fingers into paint, make your prints, and then draw on features to create fun animals, people, bugs and even cars or balloons—whatever you want to make! I’m going to have the kids practice on index cards and then fill small journals with teeny, tiny fingerprint art. Fun, right?

To get an idea about what I mean, you can look at galleries here, here, and here. We are definitely making monkeys and caterpillars, as well as some monsters, people and the house with balloons (a la Pixar’s Up). I have 14 kiddos coming (originally 17!) so hopefully we can all find a place to curl up and make art. Thankfully this tiny art doesn’t need much space. You can make it larger, of course. Feel free to take up a whole sheet of paper with dot patterns or prints for larger creatures. Try making a giraffe all out of thumbprints!
