Fantasy’s not for chicks

I’ve loved fantasy all my life. I grew up on movies like Wizard of Oz, The Neverending Story, Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. I read everything from Harry Potter to Lord of the Rings, and I’m still finding new series in which to immerse myself. I love it, and the Internet allows me to connect with my fandom fanaticism like never before through memes, crafts, recipes and other fun stuff.

There’s also a bunch of other fans online that are really fun to connect with. It’s nice to discuss various book theories or analyze episodes with one another—unless you’re a girl. No matter what thread I’m on in any fantasy series forum, Facebook page or other gathering, there’s always comments—from different people—about how the “house won’t clean itself, woman,” when a woman wants to engage in a debate, or how this series isn’t “for chicks” (regarding Game of Thrones). Lots of guys also get really pissed talking about how they may not see a certain character nude anymore in the series. (I’ve got news for you, dudes; if that’s why you’re watching, you’re paying too much. Skip the HBO and find some free porn online.)

It’s really, really irritating.

Do you ever feel unwelcome in a community because of your gender? If so, do you just ignore the voices that oppose your very existence, address the hateful comments (and be told, “It’s only a joke! Lighten up!” of course), or leave altogether despite your interest in the subject?
