Tips from Wood Sprite

Easy puppet-making

One of my friends sends Wood Sprite the most adorable seasonal puppets via card throughout the year. She has received a few of these cards that feature really cute puppets according to that holiday. Upon receiving her latest Valentine card, Sprite decided to make our friend a puppet in return. She sat next to me today and made the cutest two-headed dragon finger puppet, pictured here.

To make a puppet, Sprite says you need to use either felt or foam. She used foam today because we are low on felt. First, draw the puppet you want, then cut it out. Make sure your finger can fit. Cut out another piece to attach to the back that covers your finger. This piece does not have to match the front piece.

According to Wood Sprite, you should use tape, not glue, if you are using foam pieces to make your puppet. This is to make sure it bends with your finger. Your tape should be clear and of decent quality. She recommends Target tape, but that’s because she just loves Target. We agreed that glue or thread is better for felt pieces, but I protested that glue is better for foam, too.

I suggested adding glitter to the puppet, but Sprite scoffed that this was NOT the kind of dragon that likes glitter. (She also told me that I’m a “glitter hippie” not too long ago.)

She packed up the puppet with several other items that she made and it’s ready to go to the post office this afternoon, though we are running behind and it might not be sent until tomorrow. I have to say that I know I’m biased, but I think this is a pretty cute puppet. Sprite is talking about opening up her own store, and this might become a featured item.
