Dr. King activities
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the first heroic figures that Wood Sprite came to know and love. She must have been three or four when we first started talking about him. I remember my friends and family being shocked that we delved into his life before Susan B. Anthony’s, since I’ve been a feminist since I was, oh, born! I had just discovered some lovely picture books about Dr. King at the library, so we started from there.
Now, every year, we celebrate Dr. King Day with various activities (crafts, books, videos, etc.) but we also try to take action about a cause that Wood Sprite is interested in. She is very anti-tobacco company right now and that may be what she chooses to do again this year, but I couldn’t tell you for sure until Monday!
Here are some other cool Dr. King activity ideas. Do you do anything special to celebrate?
The Crafty Crow has a whole bunch of craft projects you can do together. I just love the circle of hands and peace sign, and I know Wood Sprite’s going to love that, too; she has a thing for peace signs already.
In Culture Parent has a few facts and book ideas. Here’s an even bigger list, with 18 book recommendations.
Pick a cause you are interested in or take a stand against something that you find ethically wrong together. When I was little my mom and I did this for the first time when our swim teachers were laid off from their union. I can’t remember how old I was—nine or ten?—but I do remember going to City Hall in my bathing suit…
