Cooking resources for kids

11/16/13

Wood Sprite is very much into cooking these days. She likes to do simple things all on her own, like preparing pitchers of lemonade, making sandwiches and toast, and anything else I’ll let her do. I’m wary about letting her around the stove; not just because she is eight, but because our stove is an old gas model with pilot lights that scares me. We have an electric one we are planning on installing and that will make me more comfortable.

Anyhow, I’ve been adding as many cooking resources into her life as possible to help foster her interest and I thought I’d share. What cooking resources do you use with your kids?

Classes: We are taking a cake decorating class from our friend M in our local co-op group, and she’s also taken a few cooking classes from the Dierbergs grocery store chain.

Taste Buds: This Canadian cooking show for kids on Qubo is so much fun to watch. It covers science, history, math and so many other subjects for those of you who are interested, plus it simply features some really tasty recipes. The website features some fun resources, too.

Experience: Wood Sprite helps in the kitchen pretty much daily, whether she’s mashing potatoes, cutting vegetables, or stirring batter.

Food Network: Wood Sprite loves to watch Chopped, Best Thing I Ever Ate, and Eat Street. Actually, that last show is on Cooking Channel, I think. She’s learned about so many different kinds of foods that we don’t have around here this way and I love that she’ll ask about broccoli rob or purple cauliflower.
