Or just make some in an old jelly jar.

Churn it! Churn the butter!

Yesterday I asked my husband to pick us up some heavy cream so we could make homemade butter. Wood Sprite was amazed during the entire process! It’s the easiest thing to make, although it does take time and lots of shaking. Here’s what you do:

Pour a small container of heavy cream in a jar with a lid and seal it well. (You can see that we used a pasta sauce jar.) Then shake!

It took us about 15 minutes between the three of us taking turns shaking. I have to tell you, though, that my husband shook very, very hard and likely reduced our time by at least five minutes. You’ll see and feel the cream turn into whipped cream first, but keep shaking. Then it will turn to liquid once again as the buttermilk begins to separate from the butter.

Again, keep shaking! You want your butter to be a smooth, even consistency, and even when you see it start to develop in the jar there’s still bits of it throughout the liquid. Keep shaking until all of those bits create one large mass of butter together.

You can pour out the buttermilk to use in a recipe, but we really didn’t have much at all. Then you can store the butter in your fridge, of course. We used ours right away on toast and it was so rich and creamy. You can add a pinch of salt and mix it up if you want but it was actually pretty good without the salt.
