Make everyday activities a little ghoulish

Change it up for Halloween

10/18/13

There’s something about Halloween that makes my entire family giddy. Maybe it’s because our propensity to act like The Addams Family is finally accepted this time of year. Or maybe it’s because everywhere you look, there are spooky, ghostly decorations and festivities. Wood Sprite asked me why it’s not like this all year and I had to laugh. She’s my kid, alright! I think a lot of families feel like this is their favorite time of year, though, so I thought I’d share some ways we boo it up throughout the month.

I’ve already shared about our daily Halloween countdown, which contains mostly various activities and crafts that we do together (I caved and added chocolate in some boxes again!). We have a lot of fun with this project each year.

We’ve swapped our regular ping pong balls with zombie eyeballs this year. We actually purchased them for a 4-H party game but have since used them for ping pong—and they were only a buck at the dollar store.

Halloween towels, potholders, cups, plates and tablecloths are a lot of fun! We have a black tablecloth with skulls on it on our table now to replace our usual golden yellow cloth, and we bought both Peanuts and skeleton Halloween cups.

We decorate, of course—but we don’t just do it for the week of Halloween. We always decorate on October 1 and include Halloween lights, window treatments (our own homemade trash bag creepy drippings!) and new things, both homemade and purchased, every year.

How do you change up your home and activities for Halloween?
