Best Halloween media for families
Every Saturday from now until Halloween, I’d like to share the best Halloween media for families in honor of my favorite holiday. Feel free to share your own favorites, too!
To launch this series, here are some excellent Halloween stories Wood Sprite and I are already reading.
13 Nights of Halloween: This cute counting book by Guy Vasilovich is one of our favorites. We enjoyed it last Halloween, too. It is told in the same way as the 12 Days of Christmas, but with a Halloween twist. My favorite day is the goblin day; the goblins look just like the Cornish pixies from the Harry Potter series. The lyrical story and familiar rhyme are nice, but we also just love the illustrations. Wood Sprite even drew some of them in her journal.
Mostly Monsterly: Written by Tammi Sauer, Mostly Monsterly is a new-to-us story this year. It’s the story of a monster that is—you guessed it—mostly monsterly, though in secret she likes to bake and smell flowers. Wood Sprite really enjoyed this one, and she related to being different from other kids since a lot of girls tell her that her shoes, toys, clothing, etc. are “for boys.” It’s got adorable illustrations and a delightfully gross ending.
Scary, Scary Halloween: We are big Eve Bunting book fans, so it’s no surprise that we enjoyed this Halloween story. It’s a fun rhyming story about a family of cats beneath a porch. Though they are used to prowling the neighborhood any other night, they are sweetly scared of every trick-or-treater who approaches their house.
