This week I am researching anti-aging foods and finding out so much about the amazing properties of our meals. Did you know that dark chocolate can help protect your skin against the dangers of ultraviolet rays, or that beans provide protein that helps keep hair strong and thick?
I have always marveled at how foods can be just the medicines that we need, but that doctors—at least, no doctors that I’ve ever met—never explain to us about these specific foods and their benefits. They are happy to tell us to stop drinking soda and eating out (which is good advice, if you want to take it), but I’ve never had a doctor tell me how much of an impact a couple of cloves of garlic a day could have on my allergies (okay, and breath—especially the yucky burps). I am happy to smell like an Italian restaurant any day of the week if it manages my symptoms naturally!
Some of the healthiest foods I’ve come across in my reading include fish, spinach, blueberries, beans, carrots, berries in general, red wine and nuts. There are so many other good anti-aging, anti-cancer foods to try, too. Could you imagine if we all went on so-called super food diets instead of on so many medications?
Some of my friends say it’s a conspiracy to get us to purchase more medicine. I could see that. But I want to believe that doctors really do have our best interests at heart and some of them think that lifestyle changes are out of the question for some patients. That’s possible, too. I really do think it would be great for all doctors to provide their patients with a list of foods to try to remedy their ailments before they resort to medication, whenever possible.
