Basically admit they know they don't pay their employees enough

Walmart promotes employee food drive

Out of all the businesses in America, Walmart benefits the most from food stamps. A huge percentage of food stamp money gets spent at Walmart, because their food is cheap.

And now it turns out that Walmart is basically making the food stamp situation worse, by admitting that it doesn't pay their own employees enough to live on. One Ohio Walmart has started a canned food drive for its own employees. The donation bins are placed in the employee break room, making it clear that this is a "for employees, by employees" thing.

Meanwhile, Walmart is one of the richest companies in the world. It has a market value of $260 billion, which is more than the GDP of many industrialized nations including Singapore, Ireland, Israel, or Egypt.

Walmart would probably argue that it didn't get that way by paying its employees so much money that they could afford to buy their own groceries. But isn't it time they gave back the tiniest speck of their earnings to ensure that their employees have enough to eat over the holidays?

Then again, why would they? If they don't pay their employees enough, then their employees go on food stamps, which they spend at Walmart. It's like a two-fer for Walmart.

As this Business Insider article argues, it's time for Walmart to stop maximizing profits, and start providing value. Meaning that Walmart needs to stop treating their employees "like costs to be minimized." Corporate profit margins are at an all-time high, while employee wages are at an all-time low.

There is a stigma in America that people who use food stamps are poor, lazy, maybe alcoholics, had too many kids, and live in the inner city. But as you can see, a lot of food stamp recipients are working hard… and they still aren't making enough money to feed their families.
