What unholy union is this?

Taco Bell debuts the Waffle Taco

My head was still reeling from researching and writing about the amazing industrial food science brought to bear on the Doritos Locos Taco. And now I learn about the newest Taco Bell menu item: the Waffle Taco.

Waffle… taco?

If you were wondering, the waffle does not contain taco filling. It is actually two waffles folded at the hinge, filled with a scrambled egg, a sausage patty, and drizzled with syrup. (Just to be clear, it's not "maple syrup," it's something called "table syrup." Maybe Taco Bell is hoping its customers will be too distracted by watching their Sorny or Panaphonic TVs to notice the difference.)

This sweet-savory combination is poised to strike at similar products offered by its competitors: Namely the McGriddle at McDonalds and the waffle breakfast sandwich at Jack in the Box.

This hot new menu item is currently debuting in southern California Taco Bells, where it is causing quite a media stir. Although reviews on the ground are mixed at best. The LA Times called it "mushy" and "rubbery," while Buzzfeed's reviewers were annoyed that Taco Bell took a breakfast sandwich, folded it in half, and called it a taco.

The Waffle Taco will set you back 89 cents and sells on the breakfast menu, along more savory (and arguably more nutritionally sensible) breakfast burritos.

In theory, this could be good. Sausage and maple syrup and eggs and waffle all in one hand-sized package sounds like it could be a winner. But if you're talking about an 89 cent price point, and it's being served by Taco Bell? I have a feeling this will be a bigger hit with the "wake and bake" crowd than any other demographic.

In fact, you could probably make a fairly good facsimile of this yourself at home, and I bet it would taste better too. Scrambling eggs is easy (you can even do it in the microwave). Microwave a sausage patty, pop an Eggo into the toaster. Stuff, fold, drizzle with syrup, and boom: delicious, and you don't have to sit in a drive through line to get it!
