Metung is a hidden gem.

Off the tourist track in Australia?

While many travelers make it down to Lakes Entrance in the northeastern part of the Victorian state in Australia, they don’t always explore the surrounding area. Lakes Entrance itself is a stunning, small town located on an expanse of inland lakes that run for miles. Though this is a beautiful sight, the fact is, some of the smaller lake towns have lower prices, less congestion and even prettier views to offer. For those looking to explore a place that only locals seem to find, a trip to Metung is in order.

Located around 25 km past Lakes Entrance, Metung is a beautiful town on the banks of Lake King. Though small in size, Metung is the best jumping-off point for a boat trip through the lakes of the region, as well as taking a boat from fresh water to salt water and exploring the near 90 Mile Beach. Boats of all sizes can be hired at the pier, and if motors and sailing aren't your thing, you can also rent kayaks and canoes.

While boating from Metung is fun and a nice, relaxing dip in Lake King is heavenly, treating yourself to food and drinks is also a must. While there are a few small fish and chip venues, no trip to Metung is complete without stopping at the Metung Hotel and Pub. The establishment is set right behind the main pier and offers great outdoor seating and a small grassy area to sip drinks on a warm day. Mains run from around $18-$30, and pints, pots and schooners are available until late in the evening. If you find yourself a little too merry to make it out of town, you can also stay at the Metung Hotel for $80 per night. The rooms are basic and the bathrooms shared, but the price is right.

Take the time to explore Metung on your trip down the east coast. While it may be too small to be printed on some maps, the town is a must-see for anyone looking to hop off the regular tourist track.
