Minus a Wes Welker and add a T.O.
Listen, we all know we have done some crazy things when we came to the end of a long-term relationship. Maybe it involved calling up am old flame that had been left in the past a long time ago. Maybe it occurred in the fashion of catching the eye of a new suitor? Or maybe it included playing a game of catch with an aging veteran who most people would consider trouble.
In the wake of losing one of his favorite targets to the Denver Broncos in free agency, Tom Brady was caught working out with none other than “retired,” NFL receiver Terrell Owens. Owens and Brady were reported to be working out in the University of Southern California stadium along with Minnesota Viking’s quarterback Matt Cassel. Though his catch pattern may have been suspicious, Brady has been known to workout with the likes of many at the USC stadium near his off season home in Southern California.
While no word on interest from the Patriots camp has been made public, the two working out together is suspect. Owens, 39, hasn't played a snap in the NFL since 2010. After having a career low of 72 catches for 983 yards for the Cincinnati Bengals, Owens found no suitors for his services. After spending a tumultuous few months with the Allen Wrangler indoor football team, Owens signed with the Seattle Seahawks in the 2012 off season, but was released before the season started. Owens is second in NFL history for all time receiving yards and third in receiving touchdowns.
Though the Patriots have bounced back from the loss of Welker by picking up Danny Amendola in the off season, the idea of signing Owens to a minimum contract isn't completely ludicrous. Though Owens is untested, he did make an attempt to return to the league last season. Does TO having anything left in the tank? Keep your eyes on the headlines as the pre-season arrives.
