While starting at the University of Michigan, Charles Woodson became one of the first and only primarily defensive players to win the Heisman Trophy. This, of course, was a huge feat. To get that Heisman Trophy award, he beat out second-placer Peyton Manning by 282 votes. Now, after a successful run with the Green Bay Packers, Charles Woodson finds himself as a coveted free agent looking for a suitor. Will Woodson end up playing on the same team as the player he beat out so many years ago to become the Heisman Trophy winner?
According to sources, Charles Woodson has been offered a contract by the Denver Broncos. Though productive during his time in Green Bay, at the age of 34, Woodson was not re-signed by the team. Now, with multiple franchises such as the Carolina Panthers, New York Giants and the Oakland Raiders looking to sign a veteran defensive player, Woodson has become a coveted free agent. Though Woodson visited the Broncos last week, the team has offered him a contract that many believe is near the league minimum for veterans. This, though, may not be enough to bring Woodson to the Mile High City.
After his stunning career at Michigan, Woodson was the overall fourth pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. He was selected by the Oakland Raiders, and made an immediate impact on the team. In his first season, Woodson was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, and was named to the Pro Bowl. After playing with Raiders, Woodson signed with the Green Bay Packers to the tune of seven years and $52 million. Though at points he struggled with injury, Woodson set career highs in interceptions, returned punts and was named to more Pro Bowls, becoming one of only a few players to participate in Pro Bowls in three different decades. He was also named the 2009 Defensive Player of the Year.
While Woodson hasn't turned down the contract, the chance of him playing in orange and blue seems slim. Will Woodson end up in Denver, or will he return to his old home in the same division but on the Oakland Raiders?
