Broncos sign ex-Charger Jammer

Stealing never felt so sweet

It always feels good to sign a great free agent in the offseason. It makes that signing even better if the free agent was tempted away from a known conference rival. This is exactly what Denver did this week in signing free agent defender Quenten jammer.

After seeing Charles Woodson turn down their offer to return to the Oakland Raiders, Denver wasn’t too concerned. In fact, with the way the last two off seasons have gone for the organization, the Broncos have a lot of confidence in their brass to get it done before the start of the upcoming season. While Woodson may have a better pedigree, free agent cornerback Quentin Jammer, formally of the San Diego Chargers, was a great pick up for the Broncos. Jammer, 34, was added to the Denver squad this past week.

Jammer had spent his entire 11-year career in the pros with San Diego. After the Chargers front office went through an overhaul, new brass decided against re-signing Jammer, allowing him to come to a conference rival team in Denver. Before heading to the NFL, Jammer was an All-American for the University of Texas. He was a first round draft pick by the Charges in 2002, and has spent his entire career with the Chargers. In 11 years, Jammer has had 719 tackles, broken up 127 passes, caught 7 interceptions, and forced 7 fumbles. The only time Jammer has returned an interception for a touchdown was last year against Denver.

While the cornerback may not be the biggest need for the Broncos to address, adding a savvy veteran doesn’t hurt. The idea behind the signing is that Jammer will convert to safety to cover tight ends. He is the 3rd  free agent Denver has signed in the off season from San Diego. The other two are Shaun Phillips and Louis Vasquez.
