Eagles give a one-year contract to QB.

Michael Vick still has a home

Last year wasn't a great year for the Philadelphia Eagles. After only getting four wins, missing the playoffs, and finishing dead last in their conference, they decided to part ways with famed and (hypothetically) loved coach Andy Reid. They had internal struggles, saw Mike Vick get hurt, then lose his starting job to rookie Nick Foles, only to lose him and put Vick back in. But, with all sports, each year is its own journey and next year will be a rejuvenation for the franchise.

While Vick originally had a multi-year $100 million contract (the only QB to ever sign two of these in one career in the NFL), his tenure and time in Philadelphia was being questioned in this off-season. With a new coach, and a possible bench role, Philadelphia was looking to let Vick go in the off-season. Now, with coach Chip Kelly coming to the team, Vick has been given a one-year contract to stay with the Eagles.

Kelly has said that although the QB position is an area that will need to be explored that, “Michael is a competitor.” Kelly’s system in Oregon was based on a quarterback who could run and gun, but what doesn't bode well for Vick is planned runs. Vick has averaged 6.7 yards-per-run on scrambles, but on planned runs in his career, he’s averaged less than two yards-per-carry. The chase and the scramble has been Vick’s bread and butter, so the question will be whether or not he can transform into a pocket passer AND a planned runner.

The Eagles have a long way to go to get back into the good graces of the Philly fans, but Chip Kelly is a good piece to add to the equation. Bringing Vick back can’t hurt either. Though his time in Philly has had its ups and downs, he loves the city and the community, and they seem to be fond of him as well.
