Media Hijinks - Monies, Maybes and The Doctor
First up this week on Media Hijinks, a bit of news about the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. If the rumors are to be believed, this thing is costing so much money that it may be breaking some records soon. In fact, it may turn out to be the 2nd most expensive movie ever made. That says a lot about Fox and their faith in the flick, though it makes me - an X-Men fanboy - a bit worried. If they’re really spending tons of cash on this and it just happens to not be the best film ever made, the cash loss could prompt Fox to cut back drastically on all their future super hero budgets. Of course, if it hits then Fox (and perhaps other big production companies) will be more willing to invest in the big-budget super hero movies. It’s a serious gamble for Fox and I’m personally hoping that Bryan Singer knocks it out of the park. Not just because I’m an X-Men fanboy, but because I’d really like to see the genre be taken more seriously in the future.
Next up, a piece of news that could be amazing or could be the worst thing imaginable. Apparently, David Goyer (the DC movie guru right now) is pitching a Sandman adaptation. He wants to make a movie from the famed and much-loved Neil Gaiman property and the powers-that-be seem to be responsive. With the other Vertigo comic line projects in the making - Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark and the Hellblazer/Constantine TV series - it could be a good time to drop this mega-bomb of brand recognition. Unfortunately, the biggest argument (and one I agree with) is that Sandman would be a pain in the butt to present as just one movie. Can they do it? Well, first of all we shall have to find out whether they plan to do it at all. Cross your fingers (or not).
Third on the list, a joyful event for all Lord of the Rings geeks (myself included) that are too lazy to go and read books about the series creator J.R.R. Tolkien. There is a biopic in the works that will tell the tale of Tolkien and let people know how he came to craft his famous series. Not much is known about it just yet, but you can head over to this site and learn a bit more.
And speaking of Doctor Who (okay, so maybe I wasn’t actually talking about The Doctor, but whatever), it looks like the rumormill for Star Wars is working overtime. Apparently, Matt Smith is said to have gone into casting for the upcoming Episode VII. Okay… WTF? Well, if he does happen to make it into the new movie, I’m totally okay with that. Talk about a geek pedigree! Better yet, they should make him into some sort of Sith villain. Or maybe that’s just me…
And so ends another installment of Media Hijinks. Until next week, remember to keep your eyes peeled for a blue phone box - it is the portal to endless adventure.
