Learning appreciation and gratitude through travel.

Maybe the grass isn't greener, but you are

Some people travel to find some form of sanity in the craziness that is everyday life. Other people travel to put off the real world that tends to make said people crazy. Though my choice to travel definitely encompasses aspects of both, what all variations of travelers learn is that each journey helps us to appreciate and be grateful for what we have been given.

One of my favorite travel books, with some of the best inspirational quotes for those with a wandering soul, is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I’ve found this book is a fantastic gift to give to someone in search of something new, as well as a great motivator to travel.  As it has helped me many times before, one quote I always find myself harping on goes as follows:

“When each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises.”

My favorite part about this quote is the idea that every day and every moment is an adventure. Life is what we make of it and it’s our choice how we want to perceive the world we live in.

While working in a typical job, regardless of if we love it or not, falling into a pattern can lead to monotony. It becomes all too easy to click the autopilot button and check out. This is why travel is so important. I can’t promise it will solve the world’s problems, or it will solve any problems, but what I can promise is change. A trip out of the country will reignite the spark of excitement in your life. It may be subtle, but upon return you’ll find yourself valuing all the small things around you that often are overlooked. A hot shower and full refrigerator will never look the same again.
