Dolphins acquire Mike Wallace and Dannelle Ellerbe.

Making off season moves

While this week former Miami Dolphins Running Back Reggie Bush announced he wasn't returning to the team, there weren't too many people in the Sunshine State showing much concern. Most Dolphin fans were more concerned with whether or not one of the top free agents this year would be sporting the turquoise and orange uniform in the 2013/14 season. Those Dolphin fans had their prayers answered.

On Tuesday, the Miami Dolphins inked in former Pittsburgh Steeler receiver Mike Wallace for a five-year, $60 million deal, with $30 million guaranteed. They made the announcement via their Twitter page saying, “The ink is dry and it’s official. Please welcome [Mike Wallace] to the Miami Dolphins!” Wallace is thought to be one of the top free agents, if not the top overall, this off season.

During his time with the Steelers, Wallace, 25, led the team in receiving yards. Though his rookie season title was shared, the past two seasons he was the solo lead. He had 1,193 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 2011, before Pittsburgh changed their offensive coordinators. Wallace was drafted in 2009 out of Mississippi. He was taken in the third round with the 84th overall pick.

Along with Wallace, the Dolphins also swiped linebacker Dannell Ellerbe from the Baltimore Ravens. Ellerbe’s deal is for $35 million over five years. Ellerbe was thought to be the most efficient defensive player on the Super Bowl squad, finishing the season with 89 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Linebacker Karlos Dansby was dropped to make room for the two new incoming players.

Though it has not been confirmed, sources also say the Dolphins are making a run at tight end Jared Cook. With the new management in Miami, the Dolphins look like they are creating a team fans can be proud of. Will these moves be enough to make them a playoff contender?
