Which movie won the weekend box office?
Well, well, well, America: It seems the cult obsession with all things Evil Dead is actually alive and well. The latest horror remake to hit Hollywood raked in an impressive amount in its opening weekend, as fans flocked to theaters to get their collective wits scared right out of them.
I'm going to tell you right now: I did not see the new Evil Dead over the weekend. Heck, I'm such a chicken I can't even watch the commercials for the film. Yeah, going to see this in the theater would result in some trauma for me, but I totally respect and understand those who were brave enough to sit through this movie. The reviews for it were actually decent (especially considering it's a horror film, usually those get slammed across the board). So, yay for you if you love a great cult horror flick, right?
The Evil Dead movie remake debuted with a pretty impressive $26 million in domestic ticket sales during its first weekend of release, proving that there is still great interest in the Evil Dead franchise (created by the brilliant and beloved Sam Raimi). Thanks to this excellent review of the series, I did watch the first film (thank you, Netflix streaming) and it was pretty fun. In fact, it was way more fun than it was scary. I'm not sure that's the case with this Evil Dead remake -- it looks positively terrifying!
So, now that Evil Dead 2013 is out in theaters and doing well, does this mean the scary commercials will finally cease? I hope so.
Back to the box office results: The animated movie The Croods finished in second place, while G.I. Joe: Retaliation was third. According to the latest numbers, the films actually tied with $21.1 million each domestically.
Fourth place at the weekend box office goes to the 3D re-release of Jurassic Park. This is on my radar. In fact, I think I'm going to hit the theater this week, even though it will cost me big bucks. This is a classic Steven Spielberg film, and certainly among his best (in my opinion). The truth? I just really, really wanna see the dinosaurs in IMAX 3D, and I'm perfectly willing to pay for that thrill.
Did you see a new movie this past weekend? Evil Dead? Jurassic Park? The Croods? As always, I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
