Here's a hint: It wasn't a debut film.

Which movie was number one at the weekend box office?

Now that we're fully entrenched in the pre-summer movie theater blahs, allow me to share one tidbit of news: Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful is now the biggest grossing film of the year, so far. Does that surprise? Not really. The offerings are, quite honestly, terrible. Oz stands out, even though it's (from what I understand) pretty mediocre, simply because it doesn't suck. That's not going to get me to buy a ticket, but it's getting others to, if the latest box office numbers are any indication.

All total, figures show that Oz the Great and Powerful took in an additional $42.2 million in its second weekend of release, bringing it to the $145 million mark domestically. It didn't have much in the way of heavy competition. Two major film debuts, The Call (starring Halle Berry) and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (starring Steve Carell and Jim Carrey), both had really bad numbers, especially considering their star power.

The Call was second at the weekend box office, taking in just over $17 million. That's not horrible, but it's not overly exciting. Did anyone see this thriller? Reviews weren't awesome so I skipped it, but if any of you tell me "Laurie, you must see this, it's great!" I'll totally change my mind and go.

As for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, well, it just didn't look that good in the previews to me. I realize that it's Jim Carrey, Steve Carell AND the always awesome Steve Buscemi, and still, I think it looks just so-so. As with The Call, if you saw it and loved it, let's hear about it.

I'm sure I'll wind up getting all of these films as soon as they're available on DVD, but I've decided that I'm giving up my habit of weekly theater-going for the time being. I've got too many great Netflix shows to watch and it's too nice outside to sit in a dark theater watching a movie I'm only half-excited to see.

In coming weeks, only a few new movies seem possibly intriguing enough to get me to go: Olympus Has Fallen, The Host and The Place Beyond the Pines. I am sure the spouse will want to see the G.I. Joe movie, but he's on his own with that one. And if any of the aforementioned films get horrible reviews, I'll opt to stay home, too.

Is it summer yet? Ugh!
