Now that we've suffered through yet another overly long Grammy Awards ceremony (though that mass wedding during Macklemore's set was moving and wonderful and the highlight of the whole thing for me), it's time to talk movies again. It's no surprise that Ride Along, the buddy cop comedy starring Kevin Hart, topped the box office, especially given the rather puny competition.
Ride Along landed in the top spot again this week, taking in an estimated $21.2 million. And once again this week, Lone Survivor was in second place, earning $12.6 million. The animated comedy The Nut Job was third ($12.3 million), followed by Frozen ($9 million) and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit ($8.8 million). The real surprise, at least to me, was just how badly I, Frankenstein bombed with moviegoers in its debut weekend.
I, Frankenstein had a lot of things going against it: Terrible reviews, a generally weak January box office and a field of other choices that clearly seemed much more attractive to audiences. An $8.3 million take for a film with a $65 million budget is very bad news for Lionsgate. I don't see things improving for this one anytime soon.
Several of the major Academy Awards Best Picture nominees performed well over the weekend, including American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club and Her. And while it isn't up for Best Picture, August: Osage County did manage a top 10 finish.
I spent the weekend catching up on some other Oscar-worthy films and performances, via rentals, and I have to say, I don't feel the least bit guilty about that. Sometimes you just need to veg out on the couch and enjoy films from your own comfy spot. I've already written about Cate Blanchett's awesome performance in Blue Jasmine, but we also watched (and really liked) Captain Phillips.
What, if anything, did you guys see this past weekend?
