No one could defy 'Gravity'

What movie topped the weekend box office?

If it seems like all I'm talking about right now is Gravity, that's true. But at the moment, this movie is the movie event of Fall 2013, so I hope you'll indulge me just a bit. In this case, I'll tell you that Gravity easily won the weekend box office, beating down all other competitors handily.

All total, Gravity took in a whopping $55.6 million in its opening weekend. A big chunk of that money was from 3D ticket sales, not surprisingly. As I noted in my review of Gravity this week, this is a $100 million film that begs to be seen in 3D and IMAX. Gravity's debut weekend take makes it the biggest October film opening ever, besting the previous record holder, Paranormal Activity 3, by several million dollars.

Not surprisingly, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 continued to do well this past weekend, taking in an additional $21.5 million. This is the only animated, family friendly film in theaters right now, so expect a continued strong run from Cloudy 2 in the weeks to come.

Last week, I predicted that Runner Runner, the thriller starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, wouldn't do all that well - especially up against a blockbuster like Gravity and especially because the reviews for the movie were quite dismal. I was right. Runner Runner did manage third place at the weekend box office, but it took in only $7.6 million, despite opening in well over 3000 theaters. Yeah, that's awful. I'd say it qualifies as an official box office bomb.

Rounding out the top five are two other movies I've seen and really enjoyed: Prisoners ($5.7 million) and Rush ($4.5 million). While the numbers were clearly down for both of these films, it's understandable, given that Gravity drew such a wide audience.

Did you see anything this weekend in the theater? If so, let's hear about it in the comments. I'm all ears!
