What movie reigned supreme at the weekend box office?
Once again, Pixar's Monsters University, a prequel to the well-regarded and much beloved Monsters, Inc., took top honors at the weekend box office. Given the fact that this is a great, kid-friendly animated film, the fact that it made an additional $46.2 million in ticket sales over the weekend isn't at all surprising. So far, Monsters U has made a whopping $171 million total - and this is just the movie's second full week of release.
Impressive, isn't it? But while Monsters University being number one isn't a surprise, there are a few highly notable surprises. For one, The Heat, the buddy comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, debuted in a very strong second place, taking in an estimated $40 million. Boom! This was my movie of choice over the weekend, and I liked it. You can see my "snap" review right here.
The Heat's box office take bodes well for future female-driven comedy films, and it's especially impressive when you consider that 1) it's an R-rated movie and 2) it's up against some major summer blockbuster movies. I'd wondered last week whether Paul Feig's The Heat could beat Roland Emmerich's action-thriller White House Down, and guess what? It did, handily.
White House Down, by all accounts, failed to make the big impact that studio execs hoped for, even with the star power of Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx. The movie finished fourth for the weekend, taking in $25.7 million. It was bested by Marc Forster's World War Z, which made an additional $29.8 million. And Man of Steel continues to rake in the big bucks, with a fifth place take of $20.8 million (and a total gross, so far, of $248 million in just three weeks).
I'll admit, I'm a bit surprised that White House Down didn't do better with movie-goers, even with the lukewarm-to-poor reviews it got. Are we suffering from mega-budget action movie fatigue at this point?
What, if anything, did you see this past weekend at the theaters? Let's hear it!
