No big surprise: 'Ender's Game' did well.

What film won the weekend box office?

Did anyone see Ender's Game over the weekend? If so, you're not alone. The science fiction action flick was the number one film in its debut weekend, easily besting all other competitors. Last week, I told you I thought this would happen. I also said that Ender's wouldn't be number one for long, because one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, Thor: The Dark World, is opening on Friday and will hammer the competition (see what I did there?). Still, number one is number one, even if it is for just one week.

All total, Ender's Game landed in first place at the weekend box office by taking in $28 million. Is that great? Not really, but it's not horrible either. As far as 2013 sci-fi movies go, it's not nearly as good as Pacific Rim and Oblivion, which both debuted with more than $37 million. Anyone who read Orson Scott Card's book and loved it probably saw the film adaptation over the weekend. Even without the new Thor movie looming, Ender's Game probably wouldn't remain on top for long.

Onward and upward (or downward, I suppose): Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa took the number two weekend box office spot, earning just over $20 million. The geriatric Hangover movie, aka Last Vegas, finished in third place, taking in $16.5 million and another debut, the animated comedy Free Birds, was fourth with $16.2 million. That's not good for Last Vegas, but it's very bad for Free Birds. I really thought an animated family film, even one that got awful reviews, would perform better.

Gravity rounded out the top five, taking in an additional $13.1 million to bring the film's domestic grand total to more than $219 million.

But now let's discuss Thor: The Dark World for a second, because this is super notable: Thor opened in several overseas markets this past weekend, and took in more than $109 million. That's a staggering amount, and it bodes well for a huge U.S. opening on Friday. Get ready, it's time for another Avengers movie (yay)!

Did anyone see anything great this weekend? I'd love to hear about it in the comments.
