Alright, alright, alright.

The 2014 Golden Globe Awards: A few surprises.

At the moment, I'm still trying to absorb everything I've just seen, but suffice it to say, this year's Golden Globes Awards were filled with a few surprises. The biggest awards, best drama movie and comedy/musical movie, weren't surprising, but I was stunned by some of the acting awards handed out. If the Globes are any indication, this year's Oscars will be difficult to predict.

First and foremost, a shout out to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who did a nice job as co-hosts once again. In fact, the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards show rolled along at a nice enough clip. It didn't feel as long as awards shows usually do. I think adding alcohol takes things to a whole new, totally amusing level (and I'm talking about the actors drinking during the show, not me at home). Also: Yay for Poehler finally winning something!

I was thrilled to see 12 Years a Slave win best drama and American Hustle win best comedy/musical (though it's really not a comedy...not really). Both films were outstanding, and I believe they, along with Gravity, will be the three biggest contenders for the Best Picture Academy Award. I will say I was disappointed that 12 Years didn't receive more wins (particularly Chiwetel Ejiofor), but it got the big one - and that's what matters.

You can see the whole list of the 2014 Golden Globe winners here, and I can't possibly break the whole show down for you - so I'll stick to the points that really stood out for me. I wasn't surprised that Cate Blanchett won best actress for Blue Jasmine. The same goes for Alfonso Cuaron winning best director for Gravity. I am torn between Curaron and Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave for this year's Best Director Oscar, to be honest. When the work is at this high level, it is almost impossible for me to pick favorites.

And no, Jennifer Lawrence winning best supporting actress for American Hustle also wasn't surprising, though I'm torn here as well. I also wanted Lupita Nyong'o to win for 12 Years a Slave. Now that some time has passed since I've seen these films, I find myself thinking about Nyong'o's performance more and more.

Some of the big surprises of the night: Matthew McConaughey as best actor in a drama! What?! "Alright, alright, alright." I haven't seen Dallas Buyer's Club, but with McConaughey and Jared Leto both taking home huge acting awards at the Globes, I've got to figure out a way to see this one, now. I was also really glad to see Amy Adams win as best actress in a comedy/musical for American Hustle. I can't help but wonder if she'll edge out Meryl Streep in the Oscar nominations later this month.

And I know this is a movie blog, but wow, the TV awards? Is it just me, or is anyone else thinking we should probably check out Brooklyn Nine-Nine? I bet Andy Samberg and company are having one whopper of an after-party right about now. I was also thrilled to see Bryan Cranston and Breaking Bad take home awards. I'm only in the second season of the show, but it's getting realllllllllly good and I absolutely can see why people love it so much!

Which wins were your favorites of the night?
