The 2013 MTV Movie Award nominations are out
I just threw out my 2013 Oscars ballot. I'd resigned myself to having nothing to really look forward to, awards-wise, for several months. I did that too soon, it seems, because guess what? There's another awards show coming and guess what else? It doesn't look too bad, based on some of the nominations.
Yep, I'm talking about the 2013 MTV Movie Awards. Stop snickering for a second and listen: The show has a great host (Rebel Wilson) and several interesting, if not overly serious categories (Best Kiss comes to mind) that make things fun. Best of all? The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, was very nearly shut out entirely. If that doesn't make you smile, I don't know what will. Sorry Twihards, the movie was terrible OK? MTV even knew it. There is hope for humanity.
Besides, Twilight is so last year: Now that the cash cow movie franchise has wrapped up, it's time to move on to the Next Big Thing. And what might that be? I'd say it's this year's Academy Award-winning Best Actress, Jennifer Lawrence. She snagged five MTV Movie Award nominations total, including Best Female Performance for Silver Linings Playbook and Best Scared-As-S**t Performance for House at the End of the Street. Yes, you read that right: That's a real category. See? Interesting! And while House at the End of the Street wasn't exactly awesome, Jennifer Lawrence gets a pass because, well, she is awesome.
You can check out the complete list of MTV Movie Award nominees here, and you can vote for your favorites. Quentin Tarantino's brilliant Django Unchained and the raunchy-but-really-funny Seth MacFarlane comedy Ted each garnered seven nominations, including Movie of the Year.
I actually really like some of this year's MTV Movie Award nominations, because I thought some great performances and movies were overlooked at the Oscars. Ezra Miller and Emma Watson did great work in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Both are nominated: Miller for Breakthrough Performance and Watson for Best Female Performance.
And sure, the MTV Movie Awards features some goofy categories. This isn't some highbrow event, though. It's all in fun, so lighten up with me and prepare to enjoy watching the winner in the Best Shirtless Performance category accept his prestigious Golden Popcorn award (I'm looking at you, Channing Tatum) when the show airs on April 14, 2013.
