My initial reacton: Joy, sadness and shock

Oscar nominations are out!

I was up at the crack of dawn to watch the 2014 Academy Awards nominations. Granted, I was still in my pajamas, sipping really strong coffee, but I felt like I was doing my part as an Oscar-obsessed fan. I'll have a lot more to say on the nominations in coming days, but I definitely wanted to put forth a few thoughts on this year's nominees.

In case you were still snoozing when the Oscar nominations were announced, here you go:

Oscar Nominations 2014

I can think of far worse things than watching/listening to Chris Hemsworth tell me things about movies at 7 a.m. Does he roll out of bed looking like that?

My initial reaction was joyful at seeing so many nominations for Gravity (Best Picture, Director, Actress for Sandra Bullock) and 12 Years a Slave (Best Picture, Director and acting nods for Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong'o and Michael Fassbender). I was also a huge fan of American Hustle's cast, so seeing four of them nominated for acting Oscars was a plus. And yes, I think Leonardo DiCaprio absolutely deserved a Best Actor nomination for The Wolf of Wall Street. Will he win? I don't think so, but at least he was recognized.

The sadness set in when I realized that many of my favorites were snubbed, including Tom Hanks (no nomination for Captain Phillips?!) and Robert Redford (All is Lost) in the Best Actor category. I am also super surprised that Emma Thompson didn't get a nomination for Saving Mr. Banks. The buzz was in her favor for weeks. I assume Meryl Streep got her spot?

You can also check out the full list of Oscar nominees here, where you'll no doubt spot a few additional snubs (ahem, hello, Documentary category?). I'll break this down in much more detail soon, but for now, I'd love to know what you guys thought about this year's Academy Awards nominations. Were any of your personal favorites left out completely?
