The 'Argo' love fest continues.

No surprises at the BAFTA Awards

As we head into the final stretch before the Academy Awards, my prediction that Argo could, and just might, win Best Picture seems more and more likely. The groundswell of support for this little film that could is tremendous, in large part (I believe) because Ben Affleck was now infamously snubbed in the Oscar Best Director nominations this year. Whatever the reason, it's happening. Argo is on a roll, and I am not sure anything can stop it.

The British Academy of Film and Television Awards had their big ceremony over the weekend, handing out a slew of honors that are making me rethink some of my intial Oscar predictions. I've got some dark horses coming on really strong in a couple of the acting categories now. Let's break this down a bit.

First, Emmanuelle Riva won the Best Actress BAFTA for Amour. Until now, I'd honestly considered Jennifer Lawrence's stellar performance in Silver Linings Playbook a lock to get her the Best Actress Academy Award. I still think she'll win, but look out because Riva could steal it.

Another Oscar category that suddenly became even more intriguing is the Best Supporting Actor's race. That is a jam-packed category, and until now I thought the Academy Award would either go to Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln or possibly Christoph Waltz for Django Unchained. Jones won the SAG award for his performance and Waltz won the Golden Globe. Waltz took home the BAFTA Best Supporting Actor award on Sunday night. He now has a bit of an edge in this race, don't you think?

By the way, you can see the entire list of BAFTA awards winners here. Argo won the Best Picture and Best Director BAFTAs for Affleck. If there was any doubt in my mind that it was the frontrunner for Best Picture, there isn't anymore.
