November, at least the first part of November, isn't exactly a huge time for people to visit movie theaters. Sure, once the holidays kick into gear, things pick up mightily, but whenever you have a big debut during a traditionally down time, it's worth mentioning. That's exactly what's happened with Thor: The Dark World. The sequel to 2011's Thor did very well at the box office, pulling in a solid $86.2 million in its opening weekend.
Late last week, I suggested that Thor: The Dark World might just hit $90 million. It sure came close. Did the film set any major records? Not really, but as Box Office Mojo points out, it did take in roughly 31 percent more than the original Thor film. We love Thor, don't we? I mean maybe we don't love him as much as Iron Man, but we definitely think highly enough of the character to shell out a metric ton of money to see him on the big screen. And globally, Thor: The Dark World is doing even better business, taking in nearly $241 million in foreign markets. There's no reason to think that this Thor won't perform just as well, or better, than the original internationally.
As for the rest of the top films, I don't see any real surprises. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa held on to the number two spot at the weekend box office, taking in $11.3 million, followed closely by Free Birds at number three with $11.2 million. The comedy Last Vegas was fourth, with $11.1 million, and Ender's Game slipped to fifth with $10.3 million. That's a tight race between Bad Grandpa, Free Birds and Last Vegas, to be sure. I am a little surprised that Ender's Game fell so much. I thought it would at least wind up in the top three.
I haven't made it to the theater yet, but I will be seeing Thor: The Dark World soon, and I'll be sure to post a review as soon as possible. Did anyone see anything over the weekend? Let's hear about it in the comments, please.
