This Dean Koontz book adaptation finally hits theaters this month.

New trailer: 'Odd Thomas' movie

Is it just me, or does it seem like we've been hearing all about the Odd Thomas movie adaptation for years? This was supposed to be out last year, but last summer, major delays hit. I wasn't even sure we'd ever get to see this one at all. Now, at least, we've got the first trailer for this thing. I can't say I'm thrilled, but at least it's something?

Here it is: the first trailer for Odd Thomas, starring Anton Yelchin and written/directed by Stephen Somers (G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra and The Mummy):

Odd Thomas Official Trailer (HD) Anton Yelchin, Action Horror

Meh. It's not awful, but as with many book-to-film adaptations, the film versions never come close to my own imagination. I love the Dean Koontz Odd Thomas books. I love Odd as a character, but I was never certain they'd be able to capture the quirkiness of him on screen. Odd Thomas is not Koontz' typical horror. It's almost a comedy at times, a thriller and certainly a crime drama. In other words, it's a little bit of everything - and when you give Hollywood something with a bit of everything, you either get excellence, or a disaster. I'm hoping this isn't a disaster.

The trailer manages to capture just a little bit of Odd's, well, oddness, and I do think the casting is good (especially Addison Timlin as Odd's girlfriend, Stormy Llewellyn), but I'm just not sure whether this will be a hit with fans. One thing I did not realize, and I do wish I had: Odd Thomas was actually on DirecTV on Demand just a few weeks ago. Had I known, I would've made an effort to watch. Some did, and some hated it. Fair enough.

Bottom line: If you're a huge fan of Dean Koontz' Odd Thomas books, I am pretty sure you'll see this movie eventually, if for no other reason than curiosity. But if you want to really appreciate Odd, you should absolutely read the Koontz' books, and put the film on hold.

Also: Has anyone else out there already seen the Odd Thomas movie? If so, what did you think? Please let me know in the comments!
