Have you read John Green's The Fault in Our Stars yet? If so, you know what's coming with the movie version. If not, trust me, it's a beautifully told, heartbreaking story. Fault is one of the best young adult novels I've ever read, and there is a reason some consider it to be an instant classic. Now, at long last, we have the first official trailer for the film adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars, and it doesn't disappoint.
For those of you who aren't familiar with The Fault in Our Stars, here's the (spoiler free) scoop: The novel is narrated by 16-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster. Hazel is battling thyroid cancer, and when her parents force her to attend a cancer support group, she meets Augustus "Gus" Waters, a young man who, after battling bone cancer, is currently in remission. Despite their circumstances, these two fall in love, and the result is one of the most gut wrenching, moving and genuinely sweet stories I've ever read.
When I love a book as much as I love The Fault in Our Stars, I'm naturally skeptical about whether a movie version will do it justice. At the moment, I'm encouraged, and here's why - the first trailer:
The Fault In Our Stars | Official Trailer [HD] | 20th Century FOX
Just from the trailer, I'm absolutely convinced that Shailene Woodley will bring the character of Hazel to life on screen in a big way. I'm not as certain about Ansel Elgort as Gus, but he actually looks a bit like Gus looked in my head, strangely enough.
Here's the thing: Each of us, as readers, certainly have our own mental image of these characters. It's going to be extremely difficult for The Fault in Our Stars movie to get everything 100 percent right for each of us, and especially because this is such an emotionally compelling work. I was deeply touched on a very, very personal level reading the book. I don't know how the the movie can possibly live up to that, but we'll see. The trailer makes me feel better, and I'll admit to getting a tad sniffly watching it.
Okay, what does everyone think about The Fault in Our Stars trailer? Are you encouraged about the possibilities? Or do you fear that this film adaptation can't possibly live up to the hype?
We'll all find out when film hits theaters on June 6.
