Unfortunately, for those of us who stay caught up on new movie DVD releases, this week is a bit on the thin side. Really, only two major films are new on Blu-ray and DVD this week. Of those two, just one seems particularly decent (and it's a biggie).
Just in time for Halloween, Pixar's Monsters University is out on DVD right now. This prequel to the wildly popular Monsters Inc. is definitely worth watching, though in my opinion, it's not nearly as good as the original. Isn't that always the way? Still, if you're a fan of Mike and Sulley, I'd highly recommend this one. The kids will love it, and their parents likely will as well. If you've ever wondered how Mike and Sulley met, you'll get your answer. Plus, you'll get to see them during their college days.
If you're wondering about special bonus material for the Monsters University DVD, here's the scoop: The Blu-ray editions feature several deleted scenes with an intro by director Dan Scanlon, behind the scenes footage of animators hard at work on Monsters U, a special documentary, Story School, about how Pixar managed to create the prequel for such a great film like Monsters Inc. and yes, the animated short The Blue Umbrella is also on the discs (this played before Monsters U, and it's wonderful).
Now, on to the other major release this week, the action comedy R.I.P.D. This one was adapted from the Dark Horse comic Rest in Peace Department, and it stars Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as a pair of cops working to hunt down bad spirits who've decided to hang around on Earth for far too long. Did I mention that the cops were actually deceased?
I skipped R.I.P.D. when it came out in theaters over the summer, and I wasn't alone. The movie didn't do very well, thanks in part to absolutely dismal reviews. Still, on DVD? I might give it a go. If you've seen it and can recommend it, let's hear about it in the comments, please.
