Does it seem like forever since Man of Steel was released in theaters? Maybe it's just me, as I struggle to adjust to the time that's literally starting to fly. At long last, Man of Steel is finally out on DVD, and just in time for those of us who'll have a little extra movie-watching time around the holiday season.
If you haven't seen Man of Steel yet, I won't spoil it for you. Also, my original review of this film is spoiler-free, but if you're hesitant, let me sum it up: Henry Cavill is a great Superman, I loved the story but I thought some of the fight scenes were a little bit too long and over-the-top. Still, the visuals were outstanding, and I'm eager to see Man of Steel again.
If you're a huge fan, you'll be delighted to know that the Man of Steel DVDs feature almost four hours of extras, including featurettes about creating the film and background on the Superman mythology. There's also a bit about Henry Cavill's ridiculous training regimen to get in shape to play Superman. Expect a lot of cast and crew interviews throughout. All in all, this sounds pretty awesome to me.
If Superman isn't your thing, how about a nice animated feature? The DreamWorks Animation comedy Turbo is new on Blu-ray and DVD this week. I missed this one in theaters, but it looked kind of adorable in previews, so I'll probably rent this pretty soon. In a nutshell: Turbo is a snail who aspires to become the world's fastest snail. Get it? Fast...snail? Forgive me, my new job is making me slightly punch drunk.
Okay one last new release that absolutely needs a mention: the Noah Bumbauch-directed comedy Frances Ha, starring Greta Gerwig in a role that's apparently phenomenal. I can't tell you how many of my cinema friends in the Big City (aka anywhere but my hometown) saw this earlier this year and told me it's one of the best films of the year. Frances Ha is a must see for me. I might just run out and get this one tomorrow.
Here's hoping we can all find something we like to rent this week!
