Come on February, you can do better!

New DVD releases: It’s a very slow week

We’ve seen some outstanding new DVD and Blu-ray releases so far this month, but let’s be honest: We knew the good times couldn’t last, didn’t we? In terms of movies, this is one of the slowest week’s I’ve seen in a long time. For TV fans? It’s a great week, with the release of the highly-anticipated third season of HBO’s Game of Thrones finally coming out. Congrats, GOTers. For the rest of us? This week is just blah.

Perhaps the only halfway mainstream new DVD movie release this week is the comedy Afternoon Delight, starring the almost always brilliant Kathryn Hahn as stay-at-home mom Rachel, who decides to “save” a stripper named McKenna (Juno Temple). Reviews for this movie were decidedly mixed, and I haven’t seen it, so I can’t give you a huge recommendation here – but if this appeals, I say go for it. The cast is good (including Jane Lynch and Josh Radnor), the story seems a little formulaic, but you never know…this could be a film you wind up loving (or forgetting the next day).

Now, I also wanted to mention that Machete Kills is new this week from Redbox, so if you’re totally into the $1 film rentals, you’ve got that to look forward to if you like the genre.

Here’s my recommendation for movie fans: I’d use this down time to catch up on some of the other great DVD releases so far this year. If you haven’t seen All Is Lost, Dallas Buyers Club, Enough Said, About Time, The Counselor, Free Birds or certainly Rush, check them out. I try hard not to get too far behind with my movie-watching, but I am way behind (thanks in part to my binge-watching of House of Cards on Netflix). I’m ashamed to admit that All Is Lost and Enough Said are still sitting on my coffee table after two days.

Happy movie watching, all.
