I'll be the first to admit that I was skeptical about the big screen adaptation of Divergent, Veronica Roth's young adult novel. Truth: I've read all three books in the trilogy, and I loved all of them (well, the last one, not so much). After reading Divergent, I knew this would eventually become a huge movie franchise. I still believe it will be. Is this the next Hunger Games? Possibly, though I'll delve into that a little deeper soon.
For now, here's what you need to know, Divergent fans: Summit has released the third and final full-length trailer for the film, and it's definitely the best of the three. For those who don't know a thing about Divergent's plot, this trailer really explains the basics quite well, without giving too much away.
Divergent stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James zip-lined their way onto Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night to reveal the big new trailer, and to talk about the film. And so, the final big marketing push before the movie opens on March 21 begins!
You can view the full-length Divergent trailer here.
Okay, thoughts? Any fellow fans of the YA books care to weigh in here? Unlike several recent YA book adaptations that have flopped miserably at the box office (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, anyone?), I think this one has the most potential to become the next "big thing." The story is interesting, but not overly complicated and the protagonist, Tris Prior, is brave, strong and played by one of today's best young actresses in Woodley.
For now, I'm going to make sure my spouse sees this particular Divergent trailer, because he keeps asking me, "What, exactly is this about?" Those of us who've read the books take for granted that everyone else understands what's going on. I think this trailer does a great job providing a little clarification. Sure, Divergent will have a built-in audience of fans when it opens, but that won't be enough to generate astronomical ticket sales. New fans will need to get on board. Trailers like this one can help tremendously in that respect.
