Hint: It wasn't a big-budget blockbuster.

Guess which movie won the weekend box office?

Surprise, surprise: Another big-budget Hollywood blockbuster is on life support after a disappointing weekend debut. I'm talking about R.I.P.D., the action/comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as two undead police officers. I can't say this is shocking. The trailers seemed pretty lame to me, and there's just way too much decent competition in theaters right now.

Now here is what's really interesting: Guess which film did take the weekend box office crown? A relatively low-budget horror film. The Conjuring managed to make $41.5 million in its opening weekend. For a film that cost just $20 million to make, that's a nice take. For the second time this summer, a horror film has bested the big tentpole films. Remember The Purge? It came in at number one early last month, easily beating the big-budget comedy The Internship.

We just saw The Conjuring, and once my hands stopped shaking, I managed to get out a snap review, which you can read here. Yeah, it's a scary movie, for sure. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Okay, let's look at how some of the other movies did at this past weekend's box office, shall we? Coming in at number two is the animated gem Despicable Me 2, with $25 million. The Conjuring finally knocked it out of the top spot, but overall, this one has done really well. DreamWorks' animated offering Turbo didn't fare as well, taking in just $21.5 million in its debut weekend. Adam Sandler's Grown Ups 2 is still in the mix, coming in fourth place with a $20 million take. Red 2 rounds out the top five, with a pretty weak debut of $18.5 million.

I'm not sure how long The Conjuring will be able to hang on to the top spot, because we've got The Wolverine waiting in the wings. Still, it's a great movie and word of mouth should be fairly strong, so even if it slips from the top spot, it's still a huge win.

Did you see any movies over the weekend? What did you see? Let's hear about it!
