Will Watts finally get the Oscar for portraying Princess Diana?

First look: Naomi Watts in the trailer for 'Diana'

At long last, the first teaser trailer for the upcoming movie Diana has arrived. In the film, Naomi Watts portrays the late Princess Diana during the last few years of her life. We all know how things ended, in tragedy, but what do we really know about the "most famous woman in the world"?

Diana, which is set for release in the U.K. on September 20, 2013, is directed by Olivier Hirschbiegel, with Watts in the title role and Naveen Andrews co-starring as Dr. Hasnat Khan. This new trailer contains no dialogue, but it's pretty powerful regardless. You can watch it here.

I can't imagine that everyone's going to be happy with this film, or with Naomi Watts' portrayal, but I have to say she's definitely transformed herself in this one. No one can look exactly like someone else, but Watts comes really close. She's got Diana's wonderful shy smile down pat, for one thing. For another, I think Watts is one of the best actresses of my generation. Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Actress Academy Award for Silver Linings Playbook, but Watts was incredible in The Impossible. She deserved the award equally, as far as I'm concerned.

Could this finally be the film role that gets Naomi Watts her Oscar? It's hard to know exactly what to expect from Diana. It could spiral downward into a cheesy Lifetime movie (please no), or it could become a definitive biopic. Watts has said that playing the late Princess of Wales was the "hardest thing" she's ever done, and I don't doubt it. Capturing the essence of such an iconic woman on the big screen seems virtually impossible.

Now, when will we get to see the Diana movie? Apparently this year, because the company that bought the rights says the film will get "an awards-season release later this year."

What do you think about Diana? It's hard to know based on this brief trailer, but I for one will watch it regardless.
