Box office results aren’t surprising

Can anything stop ‘The Lego Movie’?

Good news, movie fans: February is almost over! And do you know what that means? It means that slowly but surely, our options at the theater will begin to improve. We’re one month closer to the summer blockbuster season, after all. I’ve made no secret of my distaste for the vast majority of major movie offerings so far this year, with a few notable exceptions – including this week’s number one film, The Lego Movie.

That’s right: For the third week in a row, this 3-D film took the top spot at the weekend box office, and once again, it did so by a huge margin. Estimates are that The Lego Movie raked in another $31.4 million, bringing its domestic total to well over $183 million. That’s beyond anything I ever dreamed of for a film released in the early part of the year. You can bet Lego 2 will do just as well, if not better (especially with a May 2017 release date).

Can any film top The Lego Movie at this point? Not in the next week or so. With few major releases coming out as we wind down winter, I think Lego will continue to dominate at the top for a little while longer. Can it last atop the box office until Divergent hits theaters in late-March? Possibly so.

Now, let’s take a look at the rest of the pack: Kevin Costner’s action thriller 3 Days to Kill was a distant second, taking in just over $12 million at the weekend box office. That’s not horrible, but it’s sure not what Relativity probably hoped to get. Pompeii, Paul W.S. Anderson’s epic disaster love story was third, with a take of $10 million, followed by RoboCop in fourth place ($9.4 million) and The Monuments Men in fifth ($8 million).

No real surprises, folks. The field of contenders isn’t particularly strong. Oh sure, I see a lot of hope for some halfway decent DVD viewings in a few months – but for now, things are just rather blah. Hang in there, fellow fans. 2014’s offerings will improve, though not soon enough as far as I’m concerned.
