'Hercules' also opens.

Box office preview: Will 'Lone Survivor' come out on top?

This weekend, we've got two major new box office releases. Will they do well? That remains to be seen, but with so many excellent films out right now, it'll be competitive and theaters will likely be crowded. Lots of us were stuck at home last weekend because of bad weather, forced to watch DVDs from the cozy comforts of our couches (oh, the horror!). I was one of them, but I must confess: I've been itching to get out again. This weekend looks like the perfect time.

The two new big releases this weekend are the war drama Lone Survivor and The Legend of Hercules, which, if I'm being really honest, looks pretty bad. I suspect Lone Survivor, which stars Mark Wahlberg as a Navy SEAL whose team gets ambushed in Afghanistan in July of 2005 (true story), will play well and probably snag the top box office spot. Reviews are pretty solid and I'll confess I have Marcus Luttrell's Lone Survivor book on my Kindle right now, ready to go. It's not my normal reading choice, but I am intrigued by the harrowing story enough to give it a chance.

Reviews for The Legend of Hercules, which stars Kellen Lutz in the title role, are terrible. In fact, we have our first goose egg of the year over at Rotten Tomatoes, which has Hercules at 0 percent. That's right: Zero. Proceed at your own risk.

I won't see either of these new films. No, I've got major catching up to do! No less than four films are playing here right now that I'm dying to see: The Wolf of Wall Street, Saving Mr. Banks, Her and August: Osage County. I'm hoping all of them stick around here long enough for me to get to them. I really need one of those awesome days where you can just stay at the theater and keep going to flm after film after film. I used to do that as a kid and it was heavenly! Expect reviews on all of these films, eventually.

What movie are you just itching to see in theaters right now? Is there anything that you just can't wait for the DVD?
