Box office preview: 'Thor' will come out on top again
This is a pretty slow weekend as far as new releases are concerned, with only one major film making its debut: The holiday dramedy The Best Man Holiday. We're smack in the middle of two huge weekends - last week, it was Thor: The Dark World hitting theaters and next weekend, it's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. This is an excellent time to get out and see any of the new movies you've missed in recent weeks.
The big movie opening this weekend is The Best Man Holiday. Now, I hadn't paid a whole lot of attention to this one, because I was so hyper-focused on Thor, Catching Fire and all the other huge Oscar-bait movies that are coming out between now and the end of the year. I had no idea that this film is a follow up to 1999's Best Man, a film that really helped to put actors like Taye Diggs and Terrence Howard on the map. I've seen Best Man, I thought it was a great little movie and as such, I have a keen interest in seeing The Best Man Holiday, to find out what these characters have been up to for the past 15 years.
Will I see The Best Man Holiday in the theater? Probably not, but if you were a fan of Best Man, I'd say this is a safe bet! Reviews aren't terrible, either. Enjoy it if you see it!
I suspect that Thor: The Dark World will probably wind up in the number one spot again, followed by The Best Man Holiday and then some of the stragglers: Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, Free Birds and Last Vegas.
But here's something I'm really, really excited about: At long last, 12 Years a Slave has arrived at my hometown theater! This one's been so slow rolling out that I honestly wasn't sure I'd have a shot at seeing it until next year. I'm not sure how long it's playing, but there is no denying, especially based on these reviews, that this is possibly the best film of the year. I'm going. Soon. And yes, expect a review from me as soon as I see it.
How about you guys? Are you heading out to see something in the theater, or are you waiting until The Hunger Games: Catching Fire comes out to spend your hard-earned cash?
