Box office preview: So many new movies, so little time
Here we go again: Another potentially interesting summer movie weekend is upon us, and while at least one new film looks intriguing (the horror flick The Conjuring), I predict that we're going to see at least one, possibly two blockbusters fail. I also predict that I might just go broke from trying to see everything I want to see.
A few weeks ago, I posted after seeing one of the scariest movie trailers I've seen in quite a while, for The Conjuring. At the time, I didn't know a lot about the film, except that it gave me the heebie-jeebies in a huge way. The concept looked old fashioned and genuinely creepy. Now, the reviews for this film are out and they are really good. That's unusual for any horror film, so clearly this is a good one. The last time I saw reviews like that for a horror movie, it was Cabin in the Woods, and I loved that one.
While I don't think The Conjuring will win the weekend at the box office, I do think it will have a solid showing. The teaser-trailers are great, the reviews are great and horror fans are a fairly loyal bunch. Put out a good scary movie and they'll turn out in droves. I plan to be sitting among them, though I can't guarantee that I won't have to get up and leave if I get too freaked out. Seriously, I will totally do that.
Now, the other major openings of note this week are the action/adventure comedy R.I.P.D., starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges, the DreamWorks 3D animated family movie Turbo and yet another (yawn) sequel, Red 2. Let me be clear: I love Helen Mirren with guns, but I have zero interest in seeing this one. None of the others seem particularly appealing, and while R.I.P.D. might attract some fan boys (the movie is based on Peter M. Lenkov's comic book Rest In Peace Department), I suspect it's going to tank overall.
What movies, if any, will you be seeing this weekend?
