Box office preview: Happy 'Thor 2' week!
Does anyone doubt that Thor: The Dark World will make serious bank at the weekend box office? This film is poised to be one of the biggest openings of this fall movie season. It's a lock. Now, how well Thor 2 does remains to be seen. Will this Thor have the same kind of crazy huge opening that other Marvel movies have enjoyed?
Nothing will beat The Avengers, at least not for a while. Remember, that film was a summer blockbuster. I do believe this new film will reach the $80 million range that Disney is predicting. It might possibly exceed that, hitting closer to $90 million. But hey, what's a measly $10 million, right?
I remember when the original Thor movie opened back in 2011, I wasn't exactly excited about seeing it. How could a dude with only a hammer as a weapon be even remotely interesting? I was wrong. Thor is actually one of my favorite movies from the Marvel Universe, and not just because Chris Hemsworth is a super hot superhero. I loved the story, I loved Tom Hiddleston as Loki and I adored Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.
Thor was actually one of the few comics-based films I've ever seen where I didn't feel left out at all. The story was easy to follow. I felt like an expert after I saw it (though I'm sure I'm not). So with Thor: The Dark World, I'm ready to go! I'll be there with bells on, right after Alabama beats LSU (fingers crossed, Roll Tide). We have season tickets. What would you have me do?
So, we know with near 100 percent certainty that Thor: The Dark World will debut at number one, but what about the rest of the weekend box office? I'm thinking that last week's number one, Ender's Game, winds up second, followed by Bad Grandpa, Last Vegas and Free Birds. Plenty of films are coming out in limited release (The Book Thief, About Time, 12 Years a Slave), but in terms of wide releases, Thor's the big one.
Is anyone else planning on seeing Thor: The Dark World as soon as possible? If so, let me know what you thought in the comments.
