No more shying away from something we all do - and love!

Let’s talk about sex

I read an article this week that sparked some sensation in my…I mean in me. The article is by a favorite 20-something blogger named Ryan O’Connell. He is a man who has helped me come to grips with all the nuances and silliness of being in my 20s, and while we may come from different backgrounds and represent different demographics, I think we would be best friends if we ever got to hang out. Said article, though, was not about navigating the murky waters of the 20s. This article was about choosing the right vessel to sail the sexual seas.

While sex (though I believe our generation is going to curb this) is still taboo, articles such as O’Connell’s like to shed a positive and almost silly light on the subject. For the trained eye (or those obsessed with Ryan!), you can see the serious tones and actual depth littered throughout the jokes about armpit licking. O’Connell tackles sexuality straight on, and through his own humor and prose, completely owns it.

For sexually active 20-somethings, I think the importance of communication around the subject matter is of immense importance. Communication around this issue fosters education, understanding and safety. I’m not religious, so the idea of too much education around the subject be negative is something I scoff at, but I think being able to learn your morals around the issue is another great result.

On top of this, what I like so much about O’Connell’s article and taking away the taboo is that communication also leads to better sexual encounters. For the puritans, this is where education and communication has a setback, but for us amoral folks (or empowered folks), communication leads to better, safer, more enjoyable loving between consensual partners.

I think it’s time we revisit the ideas we have around the dirty little secret of sex. I think if we are all honest with each other, we’ll realize the dirty little secret isn't a secret at all, and in fact, something we all engage in and enjoy. Maybe bringing the topic to light will affect us all in a positive manner.
