Last-Minute Halloween Costume Tips

As thrilling as this spooky holiday season can be, a last-minute invite to a Halloween party – especially where costumes are mandatory – can be a significant source of stress. Whether you're traveling in a pack or going rogue, here are a couple of quick tips to help you put together a fantastic get-up on the fly (that won't break your bank).

Have faith in your own wardrobe.

Is there a trench coat in your closet? Add a white shirt and necktie from the nearest thrift store and you've just transformed yourself into Supernatural's angelic Castiel or the demon-hunting John Constantine. Are you in possession of a pair of stylish yet affordable boots? Track down a novelty wooden stake and you'll be Buffy before you can say “The Chosen One.”

Never underestimate the contents of your kitchen.

If you want to take your costume in a creepy direction but don't have the time or the funds for fake blood and grease paint, check your refrigerator and pantry. Corn syrup, food coloring, and even coffee grounds can serve as excellent makeup alternatives. For a myriad of ideas and instructions on this subject, be sure to search the DIY Halloween boards at Pinterest.

If all else fails, remember: Simplicity is an art.

Last year, a good friend of mine arrived at a party wearing a Jack-O-Lantern t-shirt and periodically shouted “Woo! October 31st is awesome!” His costume? A Halloween Fan.
