Kuta in Bali

The reactions you get from friends and family when you are going to visit Indonesia are often mixed. Some see the massive island nation as the absolute unknown; they have no idea in hell where you are going. Others know it as the country with the largest Islamic population, and may utter the line “be careful.” While these are typical responses, the most common one people will get is questions about when, not if, they are going to make it to the tiny, yet incredibly popular island of Bali.

Known as a surf mecca and a hotbed for Australian tourists, Bali is one of the smaller islands in Indonesia, but boasts a plethora of tourist attractions. For those looking to surf, snorkel, scuba, or just enjoy the beach, Bali is your place. Along with the sand and sun, Bali is also the only Hindu area in Indonesia, and offers a myriad of cultural shows and exhibits. If this isn't enough, there are also waterfalls, coffee plantations, mountains and lakes. Though Bali has a lot to offer, one place that one may want to steer clear of is Kuta.

Though initially discovered by sun worshipping backpackers, Kuta in Bali has become known for its late night parties and accessible drugs. The buildings are dilapidated and the hustlers are on every corner. While I was hoping to miss Kuta all together, unfortunately with my travel plans, a one-night stop in the city was necessary.

Since I haven’t seen the city in daylight, what I can tell you is this: Kuta is not the most shinning example of how tourism can affect an area. While walking from my guesthouse to the store for water, I was propositioned countless times by people offering any drug of choice, as well as prostitution. On top of that, tourists are wasted, starting fights and completely representing their respective nations horribly. So far, Kuta is not my cup of tea.

While I haven’t spent much time in Kuta, my initial thought is those not looking to take illicit substances or go to dance clubs with 19-year-old westerners should head elsewhere. Indonesia has too much to offer to waste your time in Kuta.
