The MMO Minecraft

Kids love Trove! Adults… not so much

Trove is an MMO game aimed squarely at children. It's a free game, for one thing, and free-to-play MMOs are as a rule aimed at gamers with no income of their own (which is mainly children and teens). And it's a Minecraft clone, with all the Lego-like kid-friendliness that entails.

But where Minecraft has a somber tone, a calm demeanor, and a trippy zone-out soundtrack, Trove has adventure! Shiny things! Dungeons! And flair coming out its ears.

I wouldn't be so down on Trove, except that it aggressively tries to monetize its players. From splash screens to periodic emails, Trove is constantly reminding you that for a little bit of actual money, you can have that cool new thing, instead of working for it in-game. Isn't that the wrong message to send to our kids?

Regardless, Trove is pretty cute, and it's hardly the worst game kids could play.
