Why is it popular to criticize popular things?

This Guardian article explores the question of why it’s so popular to criticize popular things. This common pastime can be tiring, I think we all have that one acquaintance who apparently hates everything and thinks you’re dumb for liking it. The article is tongue-in-cheek but it basically comes at the topic of trolling from an interesting angle: what do people get out of it?
