The surprisingly complex history of the rum and Coke

I expected Slate correspondent Troy Patterson's article about the rum and Coke to be the usual dash of historical trivia mixed with a bit of modern-day frippery. Instead, I found a surprisingly complex and well-considered article about the history of the rum and Coke, imperialism, and the role Prohibition played in the rise of soda as a mixing agent.
